102-Year-Old Man Buys New Ford F-150 Pickup

Floyd Pullin has been a customer since the 1920s

Floyd Pullin of Confluence, Pa., loves his Ford pickup trucks that he just bought another -- at 102 years of age. Pullen, who looks more spry than most eightysomethings, has been a Ford customer since the 1920s, Ford says. The new 2013 F-150 STX was Pullin's 16th new Ford. To celebrate one of its most loyal customers, a party was thrown at Pullin's local dealership, Thurby Riverside Ford in Confluence. A state senator, Rich Kasunic, came to note the occasion and Ford workers prepared a video for Pullin to mark the occasion. Now, the question is, when will he be back to buy his 17th Ford truck?

The signs have been very positive for Ford's F-Series line of pickup trucks as of late, and after 24 consecutive months of increasing sales of the best-selling F-150, the automaker has added a third production crew at its Kansas City Assembly Plant that includes 900 new hourly workers to meet demand for the truck. This the first step in Ford's plan to add 2,000 hourly jobs at the plant to help meet demand for its trucks and to begin production of the new Transit van, the automaker says.

Despite some tough new competition, sales of the F-Series are the strongest they've been since 2006, according to Ford. The automaker sold 60,449 F-Series in July, the best sales figure for the mid-summer month since 2006, which also represents a 23 percent increase compared to July 2012. From January to July 2013, sales were up 22 percent compared to the same period last year.

The Ford Mustang is already the lightest of the current crop of muscle cars, at around 3,600 pounds for a GT coupe with the six-speed manual transmission. That's almost 260 pounds less than a Chevrolet Camaro SS and about 450 pounds less than a Dodge Challenger R/T, which means the Mustang has a pretty big advantage when it comes to handling, braking, accelerating and economy. More good news: The next Mustang will be even lighter.

According to a report from Edmunds, the sixth-generation Mustang, which is set to debut at the 2014 North American International Auto Show, will shed an additional 400 pounds of body fat. That 11-percent weight reduction will be thanks to lightweight materials, with a particular focus on using stronger, but less material in construction. Aluminum will feature heavily, but Edmunds' inside source warns that there is "nothing terribly exotic" coming to the original pony car.

The other big news is that the new Mustang will be smaller overall. It's going to be 15-inches shorter than the 188.5-inch Mustang on sale today, while it'll also be 6.5 inches narrower. Shorter overhangs, both in the front and rear, are also good signs for those that want an agile Mustang.

'Follow the money,' states the old axiom, and when it comes to green-car production, Ford is doing just that. The US automaker is boosting its number of electrification-engineering staff by 50 percent this year to 500 workers while sinking $50 million in its electrified-vehicle development centers. And by the end of the year, Ford will have doubled its electrification-battery testing capacity.

"Strong consumer acceptance of Ford hybrids shows that our plan to lead in fuel economy across our lineup is working," said Raj Nair, Ford's group vice president of global product development in a July 19th statement. "Our commitment to deliver great fuel economy in our cars, utilities and trucks is a key reason we are seeing strong growth in coastal markets and with import buyers."

Indeed, Ford has boosted its US market share of hybrid and plug-in vehicle sales to 16 percent from 4 percent a year ago. Through June, Ford's green-car sales have jumped more than fivefold from a year earlier to 46,197 vehicles. Check out Ford's press release below.
